American Legacy: Our National Parks opens the first weekend of October! PAPA EVENTS American Legacy: Our National Parks
On Saturday, October 3, the exhibition opened to the public and PAPA members painted in Victory Park. Artworks from the Painting Demonstration were sold by draw. The exhibition artworks are also for sale, including a special section of 18 paintings depicting Zion National Park. A 92-page color catalog illustrates all the artworks from 35 National Park Service units/artists as outlined below ($20). An essay by Jean Stern, Executive Director of the Irvine Museum, provides a historical overview of artists in the parks. For more information, contact Patty Huntley (209.940.6319)at the bookstore of The Haggin Museum. The exhibition remains on view through January 10, 2010, at which time it will begin a national tour. Demers plein-air recognition Don Demers recently won the Stobart Foundation Award at the 30th Annual International Mystic Marine Art Exhibition in Connecticut, which hangs through November 15, 2009. Demers won the award for his 8-by-10 inch painting Boat Shop (left). The award recognizes the finest qualities of painting done on location, including capturing the light and atmosphere of the scene. Demers will also be exhibiting plein-air paintings at the Union League Club in New York City in October, including an informal presentation on October 22. Raleigh on the Rim Raleigh Kinney participated in the September Grand Canyon Celebration of Art, Plein Air on the Rim. His paintings will remain on exhibit at the Kolb Studio on the South Rim through October, moving to the Sedona Art Center for the month of November. Kinney also participated in the Friday morning Quick Draw, creating the watercolor Battleship Rock (right). High Colorado Hermit a Hit! Ralph Oberg's 42-by-42 inch oil painting High Colorado Hermit (left) of a Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep sold at the September Jackson Hole Art Auction for $30,000, well above its estimate of $16,000 to $20,000.
Western Rendezvous Results Kenn Backhaus and Skip Whitcomb were invited to become members of the Northwest Rendezvous Group at the August 2009 Western Rendezvous of Art held in Helena, MT. Linda Tippetts will be an invited artist for the 2010 exhibition and sale. Whitcomb won a merit award for Horse Creek Split. Matt Smith won the Ben Stahl Best of Show Award and a Merit Award for View Over Ediza, oil, 12x16. Masters of the American West The Autry National Center of the American West in Los Angeles, CA, announced its participating artists in the Masters show, including PAPA members Christopher Blossom, Matt Smith, and Ralph Oberg.The exhibition/sale is scheduled to open February 6, 2010.
