Paint with the Best!
PAPA is holding its Workshop & Seminar in conjunction with the Art Association of Jackson Hole on August 29 to September 3, 2010, in Jackson, Wyoming. PAPA Signature Members who will be teaching are: John Budicin, Gil Dellinger, Gay Faulkenberry, Frank LaLumia, Jean LeGassick, Joe Paquet, Ron Rencher and Linda Tippetts.  For details go to PAPA Workshops. On Location with the Plein Air Painters of America
Fifty plein-air paintings by PAPA Signature Members will be on view and for sale August 27 to September 6, 2010, at the ARTspace Gallery at the Art Association of Jackson. A reception takes place Friday, September 3, at 5:30 pm. 

American Legacy--Our National Parks
Experience 35 of our nation's national treasures in museum galleries across the country! PAPA's American Legacy exhibition has finished its venue at The Haggin Museum and begins its road tour in the fall. Venues include City of Lake Charles, LA, November 7, 2010, through January 16, 2011; and Museum of the Southwest, Midland, TX, February 13-April 24, 2011. Stay tuned for new venues.  To view the entire exhibition, please go to The Haggin Museum web site. A 92-page color catalog illustrates all the artworks from 35 National Park Service units/artists, including a historical essay by Jean Stern, Executive Director of the Irvine Museum. Skip Whitcomb, The Sage
In the April 21 Mutts comic strip, Skip Whitcomb was quoted in honor of Earth Day, April 22. "Outdoors is where the great mystery lies, so going into nature should be a searching and humbling experience, like going to church."

 

American Artist Workshop
Watch for the summer 2010 issue of Workshop which includes editorial features on Brian Stewart: Four Stages of Successful Plein Air Paintings, Knowing How to Learn, and Joseph Paquet: 10 Keys to Effectively Judging the Important Relationships in Painting.

The Art of Helping
The forces of nature are a joy to plein-air painters, however, they can be equally devastating. On February 27, 2010, an 8.8 earthquake rocked Chile. In an effort to aid the victims of the earthquake, 40 well-known artists have banded together for an online auction, all of the proceeds from which will go toward relief efforts. The auction is taking place at The Art of Helping website, including artworks by the following PAPA members:  Kenn Backhaus, John Budicin, Denise Burns, Gil Dellinger, Mary DeLoyht-Arendt, Lynn Gertenbach, Frank LaLumia, Ned Mueller, Ralph Oberg (right), Ray Roberts, and Matt Smith. Opening bids begin at $300.

Reflections of Catalina
The Society for the Advancement of Plein Air Painting announced its upcoming exhibition in Avalon on Catalina Island, California, June 5, 2010. Participating PAPA members include Kenn Backhaus, John Budicin, Mary DeLoyht-Arendt, Gay Faulkenberry, Frank LaLumia, Joe Paquet, and Brian Stewart. Space is limited and tickets are available at 310.510.1552. Proceeds go toward establishing a permanent plein-air gallery in the Catalina Island Museum, which is currently on the planning table.

Prix de West
The annual Prix de West invitational exhibition at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, OK, opens June 11-13, 2010, with seminars, receptions and a sale. Participating PAPA members are Christopher Blossom, Matt Smith, and Skip Whitcomb. 

The Grandeur of America's Age of Sail: The Paintings of John Stobart
Honorary artist John Stobart is the subject of a major retrospective at the Butler Institute of Art, Youngstown, OH, through June 13, 2010. A catalog (right) accompanies the exhibition with a foreword by PAPA  member Don Demers.
