Paint with the Best! PAPA is holding its Workshop & Seminar in conjunction with the Art Association of Jackson Hole on August 29 to September 3, 2010, in Jackson, Wyoming. PAPA Signature Members who will be teaching are: John Budicin, Gil Dellinger, Gay Faulkenberry, Frank LaLumia, Jean LeGassick, Joe Paquet, Ron Rencher and Linda Tippetts. American Legacy--Our National Parks Experience 35 of our nation's national treasures in museum galleries across the country! PAPA's American Legacy exhibition has finished its venue at The Haggin Museum and begins its road tour in the fall. Venues include City of Lake Charles, LA, November 7, 2010, through January 16, 2011; and Museum of the Southwest, Midland, TX, February 13-April 24, 2011. Stay tuned for new venues. A 92-page color catalog illustrates all the artworks from 35 National Park Service units/artists, including a historical essay by Jean Stern, Executive Director of the Irvine Museum. SIGNATURE MEMBER NEWS John Cosby and West Fraser are New Signature Members PAPA President Frank LaLumia announced on May 5 the addition of two new Signature Members: John Cosby from California and West Fraser from South Carolina. Himalayan High As a birthday gift to himself, Ralph Oberg spent five weeks in April and May on a camping trek around Manaslu, the 8th highest mountain in the world at 26,750’. He covered 200 miles of trail and reached 16,500’ near the Tibetan border in north central Nepal. Along the way, Oberg did 11 small paintings. “We were fortunate to visit some very newly opened Tibetan Buddhist areas that have yet to be spoiled by exposure to tourists,” Oberg relates. “I don’t think anyone has ever done oil plein air in these areas before. The locals found it very interesting. One young lady thought the paint might be tasty and tried to test it before I stopped her.” (right: Manaslu North from Below Syacha Glacier, oil,11x14)
Brushes with Reality Jean LeGassick is participating in a four-person show of Nevada artists at Scenic NV Art Gallery, Reno, NV, through June 30, 2010. Scenic Nevada is a 501c3 nonprofit, nonpartisan environmental organization that works to preserve, protect and enhance the scenic character of Nevada. (left: Tufa Tower, oil, 16x20) Lynn Gertenbach at Hearst Castle Gertenbach is one of 25 artists invited to participate in the Twilight on the Terrace event at La Cuesta Encantada, which takes place on June 5, 2010. Proceeds fund the ArtReach which pairs at-risk youth with artist mentors.
Reflections of Catalina The Society for the Advancement of Plein Air Painting exhibition in
Avalon on Catalina Island, California, takes place June 5, 2010. Participating PAPA members include Kenn Backhaus, John Budicin (left: The Queen Awakens, oil, 11x14), John Cosby, Gay Faulkenberry, Frank LaLumia, Joe Paquet, Brian Stewart, and Mary DeLoyht-Arendt (right: Gone but Not Forgotten--Catalina Stables, watercolor). Space is limited and tickets are available at 310.510.1552. Proceeds go toward establishing a permanent plein-air gallery in the Catalina Island Museum, which is currently on the planning table.
Women Artists of the West Betty Billups is an invited WAOW Master artist at the 40th Annual WAOW Juried Show hosted by the Olaf Wieghorst Museum, El Cajon, CA, through June 4-30, 2010.
Prix de West The annual Prix de West invitational exhibition and sale at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, OK, opened June
11-13, 2010, and hangs through September 6, 2010. Participating PAPA members include Christopher Blossom, whose painting Sunrise on the Golden Gate; Downeaster Benjamin F Packard (oil, 24x38) won the prestigious Prix de West Purchase Award placing it in the NCWHM permanent collection. Additional PAPA participants are Ralph Oberg, Matt Smith (right: Twin Sycamores, oil, 18x21), and Skip Whitcomb. The summer 2010 issue of American Artist Workshop includes editorial features on Brian Stewart: "Four Stages of Successful Plein Air Paintings, Knowing How to Learn," and Joseph Paquet: "10 Keys to Effectively Judging the Important Relationships in Painting." Matt Smith is featured in the June issue of Southwest Art, and Don Demers is the cover artist of the June American Art Collector. Joan M. The Grandeur of America's Age of Sail: The Paintings of John Stobart
 Honorary artist John Stobart is the subject of a major retrospective at the Butler Institute of Art, Youngstown, OH, through June 13, 2010. A catalog (right) accompanies the exhibition with a foreword by PAPA member Don Demers. An article appears in the June 2010 American Art Review magazine on pages 116-121. Telluride Plein Air Ned Mueller participates in the June 28-July 4, 2010, plein-air event in Telluride, CO, sponsored by the Sheridan Arts Foundation. Down to the Sea Knowlton Gallery hosts an exhibition focusing on the California coast opening June 19 and running through August 21,2010.  John Cosby is part of a three-person show featuring urban life at Tree's Place Gallery, in Orleans, MA, August 14-29, 2010. Cosby focuses on restaurants and bars (right). The Mitchell National Invitational Show Opening Thursday, August 26, 2010, at 5:00 pm, in Trinidad, CO, the Mitchell Museum hosts an art show and sale. Participating PAPA members include John Budicin, Ralph Oberg, Gay Faulkenberry, Ron Rencher and Frank LaLumia. The show hangs through October 3, 2010. Brian Stewart in Grand Marais Stewart will be the awards judge, delivering a talk/presentation, and teaching a workshop at the Grand Marais Art Colony, August 27-September 5, 2010. Now in its 8th year, the Grand Marais Plein Air Painting Competition focuses on the landscape of Cook County and Minnesota's rugged North Shore of Lake Superior.
